Doug Howlett could win both the Super 14 & Heineken Cup

If the IRB are thinking about organising a battle of the hemispheres, and rugby league already has its own version with the Carnegie World Club Challenge, then why doesn't rugby union have a Heineken Cup v Super 14 end of season showpiece?

Sport is a global industry - think broadcasting, think merchandise, think advertising - it's startling why one of the major rugby investors such as Fly Emirates, VISA or Orange hasn't bought into the idea already?

The Super 14 has its ELVs, attacking ingenuity and fluorescent kits but the Heineken Cup has the rivalries, pragmatism and a format which works - knockout not the seedings...

The pre-existing rivalries in the Super 14, such as the Crusaders and the Blues, descend from the provincial competitions where it is more about theatre than a one-off pantomime.

Wasps, Clermont Auvergne, Munster and the Scarlets dished up more drama than your average soap opera in their Heineken Cup 2007/8 pool of death.

Not only would the bragging rights stretch into the international arena, thus adding a bit more spice to the meaningless summer tours, but it would also give some of the younger stars a chance to taste the atmosphere of a capacity crowd at Eden Park or Stade de France.

Everyone's got their say on which is better, but surely the only way to find out is to have a good old fashioned shoot-out - over a rip-roaring best of three series.
