Newcastle Falcons have appointed Steve Bates as their new director of rugby.

Bates has been trusted with the reigns on a part-time basis for the last two months of the season since John Fletcher's departure in March.

The former England scrum-half will assume his full-time position following England's Churchill Cup campaign this summer.
