        <b>
          <br />
So we're all done and dusted for week one then?</b>
        <br />
        <br />
Unfortunately so and we couldn't have asked much more from Sunday's crackers at Welford
Road and down in the south of France.<br /><br /><b>Poor old Bath. Such an inspiring effort...</b><br /><br />
They conceded far too many turnovers - 11 in first half alone - and the team's signature
confidence was somewhat brash at times.
<br /><b><br />
But they scored two tries in Toulouse!!!!</b><br /><br />
It's no mean feat. OK, Nick Abendanon's stunning score with two minutes to go highlighted
his burgeoning talents but Bath all too often ran it from deep inside their own half,
handing over possession at critical stages, when a big boot downfield would've done
the job cost them in the final act.<br /><b><br />
Step up Monsieur Skrela...</b><br /><br />
David Skrela turned from villain to hero in a matter of seconds, as his kick agonisingly
drifted back to break Bath hearts.<br /><br /><b>From one fly-half to another, how did Cipriani get on?</b><br /><br />
Danny and best pal, Josh Lewsey produced a neat cameo to seal victory. But it was
all over inside 22 minutes after Paul Sackey and Tom Voyce clipped their wings to
go over.<br /><b><br />
Another home bonus point missed...</b><br /><br />
Crucial error, especially with Leinster cleaning up yesterday.

Leicester 12-6 Ospreys</b>
          <br />
        </div>
        <br />
Wow! I’m shattered...<br /><br /><b>You must be happy - Leeds United win yesterday and now the Tigers...</b><br /><br />
It was a titanic tussle. No tries, very few chances and neither team could grab any
ascendancy in the second-half. But the Ospreys will be happy with a losing bonus-point.<br /><br /><b>Sounds compelling?</b><br /><br />
It was Test match stuff - a pure arm-wrestle. Jordan Crane's metallic blue scrum-cap
bundling through the hard-yards was a constant feature alongside the athletic Tom
Croft who sparkled in the Leicestershire sunshine, proving he is most certainly England's
premier blindside flanker.
<br /><br /><b>Perhaps the Ospreys seven o'clock alarm call was too early?</b><br /><br />
Free-weights in the Marriot Hotel car park - that's a bit keen!<br /><br /><b>Overly! </b><br /><br />
They struggled to get going in the first-half with the aggressive Tigers pack, epitomised
by a tenacious triumvirate on the back-row, charging, off-loading and tackling as
if their lives depended on it.<br /><b><br />
So what went wrong for the Ospreys?</b><br /><br />
While Toby Flood was imperious with the boot, James Hook missed two straight-forward
shots at goal. It wasn't until Filo Tiatia came off the bench that the Welsh galacticos <em></em>got
going.<br /><br /><b>But they did in the end?</b><br /><br />
Tommy Bowe, the Ospreys outstanding player, almost nicked it in the dying moments
with his electrifying predatory pace and vision but Geordan Murphy using all of his
experience to nudge him off line, coupled with Harry Ellis' schoolboy bullying spoiled
the resulting Ospreys scrum.
<br /><b><br />
The whole of Welford Road breathed a huge sigh of relief?</b><br /><br />
Absolutely. Winning your home games is crucial but something tells me it's going to
come down to the return leg at the Liberty Stadium in January.<br /><p></p><img width="0" height="0" src="http://www.scrumoftheearth.com/rugby_news/aggbug.ashx?id=b7073d93-c8ec-4bf4-9a57-6e7fbea17714" /></div>

          <div align="left">We've learned a lot about rugby this week. How about deep fried
mars bars don't make good warm-up snacks? And what about petit jealousies not exactly
endearing you to the general public? But they do make front-page news...<br /><font color="#ff1493"><br />
Refereeing blunders are handy...</font><br /><br />
Peter Allan missed the mother of all knock-on's from Luke Narraway (needless to say
Biarritz weren't too happy about it) Oh and how about Chris Whitaker getting away
with blue murder - how the Australian scrum-half wasn't given the same treatment as
our new best friend, Felipe Contepomi only David Pearson knows?<br /><br /><font color="#ff1493">Dead flowers of Scotland...</font><br /><br />
It's hardly rugby's worst kept secret but Edinburgh and Glasgow followed up their
losses in Ireland with even more evidence that Scottish rugby is moving as quickly
as a rolling maul under the new laws.<br /><br /><font color="#ff1493">Home not where the heart is...</font><br /><br />
Imagine being locked out by your missus for coming home late and drunk - that's the
kind of earache awaiting Clermont Auvergne, the Scarlets and Edinburgh this week.
They will need a minor miracle to (or a lot of help from the referee) progress.
<br /><font color="#ff1493"><br />
We like bonuses...</font><br /><br />
Eeeeek! The whole purpose of targets is to reach, or even surpass them. Munster, Perpignan
and Gloucester
<br /><br /><font color="#ff1493">Jealousy is not attractive...</font><br /><br />
Josh Lewsey doesn't smile at the best of times. Mind you, he's officially English
rugby's least favourite person after hitting our Danny. On the flip side, at least
Kelly Brook could kiss it better...<br /><br /><font color="#ff1493">Money doesn't buy you success...</font><br /><br />
A million pounds can buy you a championship defender or a nice big house but in France
it's rugby mediocrity. Just ask Tana Umaga.  OK, so no Jerry Collins, Joe Van
Niekerk nor Sonny Bill Williams, but in Northampton a million pounds could buy you
the city!<br /><br /><font color="#ff1493">Credit Crunch?</font><br /><br />
Banks might be struggling, but rugby is in rude health. 36,000 in Toulouse, Welford
Road was a sell-out, while 23,500 feasted their eyes upon the champions and 15,681
witnessed Sale Sharks thump Clermont Auvernge at the Stade Marcel Michelin.

            <b>Nice headline!</b>
            <br />
            <br />
Thanks..<br /><b><br />
Good day for the English - three from three...</b><br /><br />
Gloucester made it three from three with a sound performance based around a solid
forward platform and a impeccable line-out.<br /><b><br />
24 wins on their own throw. Olivier Azam will be after a pay rise?<br /></b><br />
Well Biarritz didn't really out enough pressure on the opposition throw. But you've
still got to hit them.<br /><b><br />
Did the referee break things up nicely then?</b><br /><br />
Whistle-kick-pass-breakdown-whistle. That was the sticky formula to a disappointing
spectacle. But the referee did give us all a bit of entertainment with his howler
for James Simpson-Daniel's try.<br /><b><br />
What did he get up to?</b><br /><br />
A Biarritz line-out was clearly spilled by Luke Narraway, but Peter Allan was the
only man who didn't see it bounce back off the defenders boot, and the try was scored.<br /><b><br />
Shocker!</b><br /><br />
That was my reaction to Olly Barkley's tackling. He will once again be the focus of
instense media criticism after his featherlite effort led to Biarritz's opening score.
Fortunately he can kick!<br /><b><br />
And Biarritz?</b><br /><br />
Both teams lacked a killer instinct. Biarritz were unimaginative, ticked over the
penalty count at every breakdown and relied too heavily on forward grunt rather than
shipping the ball out wide to US sprint king Mr. Ngwenya.

        <br />
Seems to be catching on doesn't it...<br /><b><br />
I checked teletext and it said Scarlets were 16 points up? </b><br /><br />
The Scarlets came out of the blocks quicker than George Michael reaches for the bottle
with Morgan Stoddart scything through a sleeping line of defence before Mark Jones
doubled the advantage.<br /><b><br />
So what happened?</b><br /><br />
It wasn't the fairy-tale ending at Stradey Park. Chris Malone's inch-perfect cross-field
kick gave quicksilver wing, Ugo Monye a clean run in while Danny Care worked wonders
behind a bullied Harlequins scrum.<br /><b><br />
Are they the main challengers to Stade Francais?</b><br /><br />
Absolutely. Not content with their flash shirts, Juan Martin Hernandez and Lionel
Beauxis were showing off with their long-range drop goals.
<br /><b><br />
Good stuff was it?</b><br /><br />
The pink wall was immovable such was their awe-inspiring defensive work. Human brick
Mathieu Bastareaud punched so many holes in Ulster's defence, it began to look like
a lump of Emmental cheese while Hernandez was like a remote such was his oozing class
and control.<br /><p></p><img width="0" height="0" src="http://www.scrumoftheearth.com/rugby_news/aggbug.ashx?id=21d39ab6-1b1f-4a5b-8b9e-8cecabf3420e" /></div>

Happy travels then...</b>
        <br />
        <br />
As expected but Sale Sharks and Philippe Saint-Andre will be straight on the Vouvray
and <em>Steak haché</em>...<br /><b><br />
A bonus-point win?</b><br /><br />
They made a huge statement, Luke Abraham, the human dustbin cleaned out all the rubbish
at the breakdown, especially for Mark Cueto's bonus-point securing try.<br /><b><br />
Sounds unbelievable...</b><br /><br />
From 1-15 it was pure industrious stuff. Water-tight defending coupled with Luke McAllister's
intelligence, whose telling contributions to the scoreboard were amplified by his
soaring prominence at the restart, gave Sebastien Chabal reason to give an English
interview.<br /><b><br />
Wow! And we've realised Scotland's best isn't good enough...</b><br /><br />
Slack tackling in the first-half cost the jocks and went into half-time with their
kilts wrapped around their ankles at four scores down.<br /><b><br />
Who were the stars?</b><br /><br />
Felipe Contepomi, back in his best position at fly-half, combined expertly with Brian
O'Driscoll for two of Leinster's four scores and behind Rocky Elsom, a menace on the
blindside, carrying straggling Scots on his back with every rampaging run, they made
no answer.<br /><b><br />
A moment of controversy or two, no?</b><br /><br />
If Andy Robinson was kicking and screaming at half-time, locals would've had to order
a civil court action such was his vociferous yelp when Chris Whitaker's hand-of-god
to prevent a certain second try.<br /><b><br />
And the Blues are dreaming of another Heineken Cup run?</b><br /><br />
18-13 at half-time, whatever Dai Young said over an espresso and amaretti biscuit
seemed to do the trick with his troops running in a further seven tries in the second-half.
Tom Shanklin, Leigh Halfpenny and Ben Blair, who notched up 21 points, were all on
target.<br /><b><br />
Even the Dragons won...</b><br /><br />
Amazing stuff really. Rodney Parade won't be used to seeing a home side score 30+
points. They're usually on the receiving end but a Gareth Wyatt brace and one from
local hero Colin Charvis made it a weekend to forget for Scotland. Thank-god for the
football team eh?<br /><p></p><img width="0" height="0" src="http://www.scrumoftheearth.com/rugby_news/aggbug.ashx?id=bf68b448-e67b-416f-9676-30b5c9c890d6" /></div>

It could've been a disastrous start to their defence - Thomond Park breathed a huge
sigh of relief?</b><br /><br />
Wayne Barnes' strict adjudication of the breakdown laws itched away under Munster's
skin but the 77th minute penalty offering meant the 26,000 fans could pull the blinkers
away from their eyes.<br /><b><br />
Montauban kicker Petre Mitu missed three pot-shots at goal no?</b><br /><br />
It was a cruel first examination for the man-of-the-match. He worked his hustling
and bustling back-row into the ground, preventing Munster from bossing the breakdown
and building a platform.
<br /><b><br />
So were Munster just awful?</b><br /><br />
They were also guilty of trying to play too much rugby - a recurring factor since
the introduction of these muddled ELVs...<br /><b><br />
And Perpignan needed a bit of Dan Carter magic?</b><br /><br />
It was pretty uninspiring stuff. How much they will rue the missed home sundries only
time will tell but Leicester and the Ospreys will expect to pick up maximum offerings
both home and away.<br /><b><br />
The feisty Italians were guilty of ill-discipline...</b><br /><br />
Two yellow-cards - one in each half - handed the Catalans the initiative, especially
in the first-half, which for most parts Treviso had led.<br /><b><br />
And an 80m try I hear?</b><br /><span id="intelliTXT"><br />

        </div>
        <i>
          <br />
Can you believe it’s almost a year to the day that Felipe Contepomi kicked Argentina
into a record-breaking World Cup semi-final? Well 2007 was a great year all round
for the Pumas star, realising another life’s ambition by becoming a doctor. Speaking
as an ambassador for <a href="http://www.rugbyexpo.com/">Rugby Expo,</a> Dr. Phl became
ScrumoftheEarth’s latest patient…</i>
        <br />
        <b>
          <br />
Despite results, have Argentina made progress since the World Cup?</b>
        <br />
        <br />
It’s hard times for the team with so many symbolic first-choice senior players retiring,
so this year has been a very important transitional year for us. We’ve moved on, maybe
not as quickly as I would’ve liked or would’ve expected, but with new personnel, a
new president and a new secretary, there’s a fresh approach, so it’s more of a four-year
plan to the next World Cup.<br /><b><br />
Would progress be speeded up in the northern or southern hemisphere?</b><br /><br />
It’s hard to say. The short-term solution would be in Europe. We have proved that
we can compete against any team up here. The southern hemisphere teams are probably
a bit ahead of us at the moment, but our long-term future should be placed in the
hands of the southern hemisphere. Argentina could definitely benefit the Tri-Nations
- it’s lacking something - it’s not getting bigger and bigger each year like the Six
Nations.
<br /><br /><b>Why do Argentineans love Europe so much?</b><br />
 <br />
The professional structure gives you the possibility to play with your friends and
earn a living from something that you are very passionate about. In the last ten years,
European rugby has grown as quickly as any sport in the world.
<br /><b><br />
You’re a well-travelled man, what are your favourite cities?</b><br /><br />
Buenos Aires is great city to live in, but Sydney, Cape Town and Edinburgh are all
very beautiful.
<br /><br /><b>Is Buenos Aires still very much home?<br /></b><br />
My blood will always be in Buenos Aires. Dublin is a great city to live in but having
been born there, lived there, it’s everything to me.
<br /><br /><b>Do you miss it much?</b><br /><br />
I miss my family and friends and all of the small details like the local food and
playing a bit of five-a-side soccer.<br /><br /><b>How did your childhood prepare you for life over in Europe?</b><br /><br />
I was lucky to play in both the amateur and professional days - they both touched
me a lot - and it’s something i’m very proud of. When I was a teenager if you’d asked
me what i’d like to be? I would’ve said “I want to be a doctor.” It’s very different
because rugby is still an amateur sport, so you’d study all week and play just on
the weekend - it’s the normal way.
<br />
 <br /><b>Would you encourage players to make a career outside of rugby?</b><br /><br />
I’d encourage them to follow their dreams. I can’t encourage someone to study if he
doesn’t want to, especially as a doctor. It’s not on. No one likes to study, not even
me. Nowadays, a lot of people want to be a rugby player, but growing up, rugby was
always just a game to me and I still treat it like that, even though it is the main
source of income and the reason why i’m in Europe.
<br /><br /><b>Has your enthusiasm for medicine helped with your rugby?</b><br /><br />
It’s helped my well-being. If you have a dream and you follow and work hard at it
with all your passion, it makes you better in all facets of life. I wanted to be a
doctor and studied hard and it taught me to be patient, industrious and disciplined.
<br /><br /><b>And has medicine changed your perspective on rugby?</b><br /><br />
My daughter has changed my attitude more than medicine. With medicine, you do an exam
and if it doesn’t go as well you would’ve hoped, you are frustrated. But my daughter
shows me that - you can lose a game or do badly in an exam - life is much more than
that. It helps not putting all of your eggs in one basket and being able to cope when
something’s going wrong, either on the pitch or at home. The important parts of life
keep me strong.<br /><br /><b>What’s been your greatest challenge? </b><br /><br />
Being a good father. I only get nervous before exams - you don’t want to be near my
house one-week prior to a big exam - whereas one week before a big game I’ll be OK.
I like to enjoy it more. I learned to play in the park and rugby is just a game, even
playing in front of so many people in big stadiums.<br /><br /><b>You are an ambassador for so many people but was it something you were born with?</b><br /><br />
You’re not born as an ambassador or a captain - you have to learn a lot first. There’s
always something in your personality that makes you a good leader but you must find
it in your own way. Whether it is in life, in a team, or a game, but it definitely
comes from maximising experiences with friends and teammates.
<br /><br />
Some captains are good preachers, others talk with their actions, and some are loud,
some not so much. There’s not one truth or one way to be a good captain, leader or
ambassador. You must do it in your own way and people will respect you for it.<br /><br /><b>Has practicing medicine and playing rugby helped you with trusting people?</b><br /><br />
Rugby is very educational and prepares you for many areas in life. Medicine is much
easier, but has the same principles. You must work as a team, not as a single doctor
or a player. That’s why I picked a team sport because I like to trust people. If I
didn’t trust other people I would have been a golfer. That is the great challenge
of being in a team - to try and get everyone in same symphony - and making sure the
person next to you would work as hard as you to achieve your goals.<br /><b><br />
Sounds like you are a perfectionist?</b><br /><br />
I aim for perfection. I believe that perfection per se doesn’t exist. There is always
room for improvement. Perfection doesn’t exist because you can always be better. That
should be your daily routine, to wake up every day with the goal of perfection.<br /><b><br />
If rugby was your patient, where would you start operating?</b><br /><br />
Rugby is finding its way. It’s a young patient that needs to be coached and educated
rather than sliced open with a scalpel and treated. It’s a fit person but it needs
educating to make sure it has a good, healthy long life.<br /><br /><b>Couldn’t agree more. You were up for the IRB Player of the Year last year, who
deserves it this time?</b><br /><br />
Dan Carter is the best player in the world. He plays with expert management skills
and makes players rise to his high standards, which is a very special talent. He appears
in the big moments and that makes a huge difference.

            <i>Danie Craven: 'It was a joke boys'</i>

          <br />
          <br />
          <div align="left">This week we celebrate the life of Mr. Rugby, 'Doctor' Danie Craven,
arguably one of the most influential figures in the history of world rugby.<br /><br />
During the 1930s, Craven played Test matches in four different positions, centre,
fly-half, number eight although scrum-half was where he excelled as one of the world's
best with South Africa at their peak, captaining the Boks on a Grand Slam tour in
1931-2 and becoming the first team to win a series in New Zealand, in 1937.<br /><br />
Success continued as Springbok coach between 1949-52, overseeing 17 wins in 23 Tests
marking him out as one of their most successful coaches of all-time. But more was
still to come.<br /><br />
He became the president of the South African Rugby Board in 1956, chaired the IRB,
as well as the inaugural South African Rugby Football Union until he died in 1993.<br /><br />
Craven had the marmite complex, loved by many who knew him, yet also hated for doing
little to challenge segregation in South African rugby, a sport central to white South
African identity, during the apartheid era. But for the last decade of his intensely-led
life, he even went around the Rainbow Nation preaching the gospel of racially mixed
sport.
<br /><br /><b>Daniel Hartman Craven 1910-1993</b><br /><br />
It was a tough week in 1967, however, for global cultural icon and Latino guerrilla
capitan Che Guevara, who was captured and executed by special forces whilst trying
to fire up a revolution in Bolivia .<br />

<br />
Lest we forget, long before Che became a tough-guy revolutionary and his rugged and
raggedy image was silk-screened on thousands of stoners T-shirts worldwide, he was
a damned fine rugby player.<br /><br />
The young Che starred at inside centre for several Argentine rugby union clubs in
the early ‘50s, and – had he been born 50 years later, he might be lining up alongside
Los Hermanos Contepomi in the Pumas’ midfield when they take on South Africa in the
World Cup semi-finals this weekend.<br /><br />
And it's <i>Srećan rođendan</i> as they say in Sarajevo to Aussie dual-coder Ryan
Cross (29), Munster battle-axe Mick O'Driscoll (30), England skipper Steve Borthwick
(29) and Kiwi centre Conrad Smith (27) and special mention must go to Simon Cowell
(49) and Sir Bobby Charlton (71) - you sell out!<br /><br /></div>

        <i>Whoever said blondes have more fun must've been in the South African dressing room
when Jean de Villers is around. The serial joker leads by example and had it not been
for persistent injuries, the Western Province inside centre would've been the star
of the 2007 Rugby World Cup. Always looking ahead, the 27-year-old from Paarl, showed
exactly what we missed out on with a string of glittering performances in the recent
Tri-Nations. Ladies and gents, it's Bukio</i>
        <b>
          <br />
          <br />
G'day Jean, how's things? What have you been up to?</b>
        <br />
        <br />
I'm good mate. Not been up to much, had the final team photo of the year today and
now for a bit of a holiday…<br /><br /><b>You must be looking forward to coming over?</b><br /><br />
Yeah. It should be a good contest - the three games - it’s something to look forward
too and gives us an opportunity to end the year on a positive note. Obviously I’ve
got to get selected first but it shouldn’t be too much of a problem.<br /><br /><b>Robbie Fleck’s been championing your case as a potential Springbok captain…</b><br /><br />
It’s always good to hear but Robbie’s probably a bit biased because we played together
when I started my career. It’s good to know that your names up there but ‘when’ and
‘if’ the opportunity may arise, i’d love to have a go.<br /><b><br />
Have you got the minerals?</b><br /><br />
The secret to any captain’s success is the players around him and the support he gets
from them. The most important relationship in a team is between captain and coach.
You’ve got to be on the same wavelength, especially when it’s not always about rugby
issues or the games on Saturdays. Captaincy is about much more than that.
<br /><br /><b>Is it similar to the bond between schoolboy and teacher?</b><br /><br />
I definitely learned a hell of a lot. There’s stuff that happens off the field in
South Africa that no school or coach could teach you or prepare you for. The traditions
and history of Paarl [Gym] taught me an awful lot and that kind of education is vital,
but much more important was the stuff you picked up away from school.<br /><br /><b>Did you reap the benefits of being a superstar rugby player?</b><br /><br />
For sure. I’d advise any school kid to play sport and stay active because there are
so many benefits. Some of the friendships you make stay with you forever and certainly
going to a sporting school, where the rugby team affects the whole atmosphere of the
school, prepared me for the professional arena.
<br /><br /><b>What’s the most embarrassing thing you’ve seen on the rugby field?</b><br /><br />
In one of my first games, a kid playing with me ran off to score a try and accidentally
ran the wrong way to our try line and dotted the ball down dead. He was so stupid
but i’ve never had any embarrassing moments.<br /><b><br />
Did you ever have a job?<br /></b><br />
I didn’t work. I got contracted to Western Province straight out of school, so I started
while I was still at Paarl. I didn’t do anything like a paper round. It’s not something
I’m proud of but still feel very privileged.<br /><br /><b>I read somewhere you keep all of your shirts and like your gadgets… Would you say
you’re slightly too materialistic?</b><br /><br />
Every time I get to put on the Springbok, Western Province or Stormers jersey - it’s
special occasion - I like to treasure them. One day I’ll tell my kids a story about
every shirt - that special try or big win - but I’ve started to give one or two away
to charity. I tend to keep all the best ones for myself.
<br /><br /><b>What’s your most treasured item?</b><br /><br />
My first Springbok and Western Province jerseys have pride of place in my house. They
will always be dear to me. And obviously my World Cup gold medal although I didn’t
participate too much to earn it. It’s still quite special.<br /><br /><b>Aren’t injuries a bitch?</b><br /><br />
Definitely. The sooner you learn that injuries are part of the profession the better
you’ll be off. I’ve managed to deal with the World Cup injury really well because
I’ve had some in the past and learned to deal with it. It does make you stronger as
a person and you learn hell of a lot about yourself.<br /><b><br />
Has rugby made you a better person?</b><br /><br />
Rugby teaches you discipline - to work hard, not only with your team, but also in
your own environment. When no one is watching, that’s when you need to put the time
in and the more you do the more rewarding it is. Discipline and learning to deal with
disappointments are very important. It’s when you realise how important family, friends
and trusting in your beliefs are.<br /><b><br />
So what would be your idea of perfect happiness?</b><br /><br />
Wow! That’s tough one… quite deep eh? For me I’ve been relatively successful as rugby
player but I realise those rugby will only last so long. Eternal happiness would be
to settle down, get married, and be a good father to my children and a good husband
to my wife. If you can be successful in that regard, you’ve done very well for yourself.<br /><br /><b>So if we came to visit, where would you take us?</b><br /><br />
To a wine farm. There’s so many around here and so many beautiful wines in Cape Town.
Growing up in Paarl, which is a famous wine region, I tend to rate myself as a wine
connaisseur. I’d have to take you to the mountains, there are some real beautiful
spots.<br /><b><br />
And what about dinner? </b><br /><br />
Me cooking? We’d definitely have some steak and that should be enough. Depending on
how long we’re talking about - we tend to talk-eat-talk and eat again - but I reckon
I’ve done close to a KG in one sitting.<br /><b><br />
What do you miss most when you’re traveling?</b><br /><br />
My dogs. I’ve got two Jack Russell’s - Lielo and Butchy - they both sleep with me.
<br /><br /><b>Butchy?</b><br /><br />
After the infamous Butch James. Him and Schalk [Burger] are both great friends and
it just proves how important your friends in rugby are.<br /><b><br />
So you’re ranked as the best inside centre in the world…</b><br /><br />
It’s a nice label to have. That’s why you play sport - to be the best. Obviously your
first goal should to become the best in your position in your own country, but being
the best in the world is the ultimate goal.<br /><br /><b>What skills do you need to be the best?</b><br /><br />
Consistency, distribution and decision-making are ultimately the most important things.
Defence is also vitally important but if you combine all of them, then you should
be quite well off.<br /><br /><b>You’re known as a bit of an interception specialist - do you practice it?</b><br /><br />
It comes down to decision-making - I picked up the skill pretty early on in my career
at school - I used to do it a lot, just by summing up the situation and once it comes
off a few times, it becomes a bit of a habit.
<br /><br /><b>Do you enjoy the limelight? </b><br /><br />
It’s definitely a good thing. There are bad times as well, especially when it invades
your privacy and the people that are affected the most are your family. They understand
it’s all part of the territory.<br />
 <br /><b>Any other pet hates?</b><br /><br />
I hate lateness. I don’t enjoy waiting for people. Queues and lines give me a headache.<br /><br /><b>And finally, if you could change one thing about rugby?</b><br /><br />
Enjoy it while it lasts because it can really end quickly.<br /><br /><b>Cheers Jean, you're a legend! We'll grab a game of golf when your over...<br /></b><br />
Sure thing mate. Sounds good. Take care...<br /><br /><b>Cheers!</b><br /><p></p><img width="0" height="0" src="http://www.scrumoftheearth.com/rugby_news/aggbug.ashx?id=08a479d5-900b-47c4-bafa-d2ae1730bb66" /></div>

          <font size="2">Who fancies it in 2009?</font>
          <br />
        </div>
        <br />
The rip-roaring Heineken Cup drama reaches its 14th Chapter with Europe's chief protagonists
suited, booted and ready for battle, all aiming to pull the sword from Munster's stone.<br /><br />
For all the southern hemisphere's dominance, they do not have a competition that even
touches Europe's holy grail. One of the tournaments new faces, Heyneke Meyer, is itching
to experience the tournament's unique cauldron and trips to the Liberty Stadium and
Stade Aimé Giral should suffice as a baptism of fire.
<br /><br />
Montauaban's lips must be tingling with the prospect of venturing to Thomond Park
to face the champions, but an unkind draw pits them much-fancied outsiders, Sale Sharks
and Clermont Auvergne.
<br /><br />
But the beauty of the Heineken Cup is its unpredictability. Who would've envisaged
Saracens and London Irish coming perilously close to a dream date in Cardiff? Certainly
not any sane gambler.<br /><br />
And the surprises are sure to continue well into 2009 with the list of potential winners
could stretch into double figures. Ireland's best are once again hard to ignore, showing
countless times they have plenty of gas in the tank while the English do not take
kindly to missing out on any showpiece event.<br /><br />
And the new laws, how will they affect matters? Even more pressure is piled on the
officials with anything but one line of judgement likely to echo loudly in journalists,
unions and critics ears.<br /><br />
The autumn internationals, Six Nations and British &amp; Irish Lions tour is guaranteed
to interrupt and pressure firmly in the minds of supporters and players alike but
rugby union's premier beast is back, hungrier and feistier than ever. Bring it on!<br /><br />

            <i>Shaun Edwards: 'I'm always going off on tangents'</i>

          <br />
        </div>
        <b>
          <br />
It’s an occupation that keeps you young</b> Wayne Bennett, the Australian Rugby League
coach said to me when I became coach “it’s great” because you’re knocking around with
people like Danny everyday.<br /><br /><b>You’ve always got a chance</b> I’m very fortunate at Wasps to coach players that
want it so badly.<b><br /></b><b><br />
We talk about a flutter on the horses</b> I like having a beer with Gats - he’s always
good for a laugh.<br /><br /><b>It’s been a great education</b> I’ve had a lot of help from people like Nigel Melville,
Warren Gatland and before I started from Mike Griffiths, Wayne Bennett, Ellery Hanley
and now Geech. I couldn’t have asked for much more.
<br /><br /><b>Wasted talent</b> If a kid for some reason doesn’t apply himself as he could or
you see a kid continually injured it’s very frustrating to see them go through that
pain both emotionally and physically.
<br /><br /><b>Someone must put his watch back in the middle of the night</b> Tom Rees’ punctuality
isn’t the greatest but once he does get to training he’s got a great attitude and
always puts in 100%.<br /><br /><b>All the players enjoy it</b> We have this off-load drill at Wasps that has a bit
of tackling, contact, and a good amount of skill involved so that’s my favourite.<br /><b><br />
Seeing guys that work hard getting rewarded</b> It gives me great joy to see a kid
work their arse off and earn success. I’ve been very lucky so far, I’ve had a lot
of sucesses, winning the Heineken Cup and the Grand Slam but I wouldn’t say it makes
me any prouder than seeing the young lads representing their country.<br /><b><br />
Hopefully your emphasis in life changes</b> A player has to be a bit selfish because
you have got to help yourself for the good of the team but as a coach the last person
you think about is yourself.
<br /><br /><b>It’s supposed to be the good part of your development</b> Becoming less egotistical
as a person - it’s all part of maturing through life from being a player to becoming
a coach.
<br /><br /><b>If you want a lot of restful sleep don’t bother being a coach</b> As a coach, you’re
constantly torturing yourself, asking ‘did I do this right? Should I have made that
decision?’ If you’re anything like me then you’re continually thinking ‘could I have
done this better?’
<br /><br /><b>It’s like a back-to-front week</b> It’s really peculiar and very different to being
a player. The last few days leading up to game are your least active as a coach. The
most relaxing time is Friday onwards because we’ll have a team-run on Saturday and
a game on Sunday. It’s nice to sit at home and have a glass of wine whilst possibly
watching the game, particularly if we win.<br /><br /><b>The busiest hours are immediately after the game</b> The analysts and coaches work
very hard on Sunday night and Monday to make sure all the information is prepared
for them on a Tuesday.
<br /><b><br />
To continue developing</b> I’m a big believer that my players are my judge and jury.
What they think about me is more important than what other people think. If players
feel like that and they become better payers and it helps us as a team and that’s
fine for me.<br /><p></p><img width="0" height="0" src="http://www.scrumoftheearth.com/rugby_news/aggbug.ashx?id=941d2670-5dfe-4e23-8c8b-6af1b846213b" /></div>

        </div>
        <br />
It's started! British &amp; Irish Lions countdown begins Friday when the Heineken
Cup kicks-off and Ian McGeechan has announced that he will select a provisional touring
party of 60 players in January prior to the RBS 6 Nations.<br /><br />
"When you've got a preparation week before we go away which includes the Heineken
Cup final then we've got to make the most of the time,"<br /><br />
"What I'm not doing is selecting a Lions squad straight after the Six Nations because
I think there'll be six or seven players that we'll probably want to see more of post-Six
Nations,"<br /><br />
35 players will make up the final touring party and 'Geech' has confirmed he will
be flexible with fitness and form with players dropping in and out of favour almost
after every breakdown or missed conversion.<br /><br />
"It's relatively easy to pick 25. It's the last 10 that often make the difference
on a Lions tour. I think it's important to give ourselves time to really look at those
final selections and those key players."<p></p><img width="0" height="0" src="http://www.scrumoftheearth.com/rugby_news/aggbug.ashx?id=944a6ad7-b573-4355-84bf-97278843f077" /></div>

too. We bumped into <a href="http://www.scrumoftheearth.com/rugby_players/high_five/zinzan+brooke/">Zinzan

the All-Blacks and er... Kelly Brook...</i>

        <b>
          <br />
So are we ever going to agree on these ELVs?</b>
        <br />
        <br />
God only knows what’s going to happen in the next six months. The northern hemisphere
has said we’re not going to take all of the rules while Australia, South Africa and
New Zealand have done so and they’re already developing and trying to play with it,
which is giving them an advantage. The autumn test series could be a bit of a shambles
<br /><br /><b>I’m worried we’re going to get a hiding...<br /><br /></b>You need direction and closure and must ensure you’re on a level playing field.
Coaches and players need the same thing as everyone else. It could be a rip off for
the fans if they say ‘oh we're changing the rules today because we haven’t embraced
it.’ It could potentially become a farce.<br /><br /><b>Clearly the referees, fans and players alike are becoming extremely frustrated...</b><br /><br />
We need to make sure the referees referee the game properly and the decisions made
aren’t from two different rule-books. We’ve talked about ELVs for the last 6 months
but you know damn well in another 6 months, they’ll change another rule.<br /><br /><b>Is it just a shoddy attempt at a form of entertainment… like anti-rugby?</b><br /><br />
I don’t think it’s anti-rugby. Rules aren’t created for entertainment. They are there
to make sure rugby is competitive. We’ve got to make sure they are implemented for
the right reasons, to take rugby forward.
<br /><br />
There is always going to be discrepancies when you change the rules. That’s just what
happens. One man’s interpretation of a rule is different from someone else. That’s
the crux of the autumn Test series. We all must buy into it and when we come into
the Six Nations, we must all agree and come into it on a level playing field…<br /><br /><b>So it’s an ultimatum in autumn then?</b><br /><br />
Autumn must be the cut-off point. Clear definitive decisions must be made as to ‘these
are the rules, these are the ones that will happen and these are the ones were going
to embrace.’ We’ve always had a northern-southern hemisphere divide. We’ve just got
to get over it.<br /><br /><b>Will the northern hemisphere ever catch up?</b><br /><br />
The southern hemisphere is always going to dominate. Australia, South Africa and New
Zealand are always going to be the market leaders. I’m not being arrogant but we’re
always going to be the dominant hemisphere because the guys here have got so many
players. England were fantastic in 2003, but there won’t be a northern hemisphere
side that wins the Rugby World Cup in 2011.<br /><b><br />
Do you not think they could repeat the success in New Zealand?</b><br /><br />
Clive Woodward performed a masterstroke in 2003. England went to New Zealand, beat
them, went to Australia, whacked them on their home turf, where the World Cup was
held.
<br /><br />
South Africa, Australia and New Zealand play in their own back yards three or four
games a month, be it in the Tri-Nations or the Super 14.
<br /><br />
That makes England’s achievement even more amazing given they were by far the best
team in 2003 and prior to that. I wasn’t surprised they won it but I don’t see any
northern hemisphere side winning in 2011.<br /><b><br />
Why are you so confident?</b><br /><br />
It’s because we’re [New Zealand] better. Why is Dan Carter, Luke McAllister and Chris
Jack here? They’re New Zealand players.
<br /><br />
Look at the track history of New Zealand rugby; our record against any team is by
far the best. Look at Australia, since the introduction of the Super 12 and the Tri
Nations, they have actually blossomed. The void between them and New Zealand isn’t
that great whereas before we used to beat them with ease.<br /><br /><b>Is it a basic level of performance issue?<br /></b><br />
We’re just better in skill and attitude. You shouldn’t be distracted from winning
the games and focusing on the basics. Rugby is the simplest game, you get the ball,
get it over the line, scrum, line-out, and all the rest. Sometimes England complicate
things.
<br /><br /><b>Can Martin Johnson turn around England’s fortunes?</b><br /><br />
I think England will pick off one of the three Tri-Nations sides in the Autumn.
<br /><br />
He’s got a Kiwi attitude. <a href="http://www.scrumoftheearth.com/rugby_players/high_five/martin_johnson/">Martin
Johnson</a> was a class player but great players don’t always make good coaches.
<br /><br />
You don’t have him there to sort out the line-out, you don’t have a Lawrence Dallaglio
to sort out the back of the scrum, you don’t have a Richard Hill, a Neil Back, Jason
Leonard or a Matt Dawson or Will Greenwood or Jason Robinson, so he’s going to have
his hands full.<br /><br /><b>If you were Martin Johnson, what would you do?</b><br /><br />
Implement a youth structure, tagging four or five blindside and openside flankers,
two or three good number eights and so on.
<br /><br />
You need a player pool base and take these guys to the southern hemisphere and chuck
them in at the deep end, it’s sink or swim, and let them play.
<br /><br />
It’s an education process of being prepared for the ass-end of where you need to be.
If you have all this fluffy nonsense that goes around, ’thinking you’re better than
what you are,’ like all of these footballers then it’s just a façade.<br />
 <br /><b>So do you endorse <a href="http://www.scrumoftheearth.com/rugby_players/my_world/danny_cipriani/">Danny
Cipriani’s</a> showbiz movements?<br /></b><br />
Good for him. I take my hat off to him but you’re a rugby player at the end of the
day, so you’ve just got to get on with show.<br /><br /><b>Is there a danger than rugby’s going that way?</b><br /><br />
Nah rugby’s not going that way. When you start getting into the Kelly Brook’s of this
world, then there is an issue but it’s a win-win situation. She’s promoting herself
and picks up this hot successful young sportsman. Lucky bloke.<br /><br /><b>Not a bad rehab programme?</b><br /><br />
Rehab? I’m getting some exercise… Yeah right…
<br /><br /><b>Kelly said they’ve been doing some dancing together?</b><br /><br />
I’ve always liked Kelly Brook she’s very voluptuous. Wouldn’t you like to tango with
Kelly Brook?<br /><br /><b>Absolutely…</b><br /><br />
I just wanted to make sure you said it too.<br /><br /><b>Is it different in New Zealand then?</b><br /><br />
As soon as you get a rugby ball in your hand, you want to play for New Zealand - the
hot girlfriend and all the perks comes with it - look at Dan Carter [appearing at
the New Zealand Toast festival] he’s in shorts and sandals. If footballers were here
they’d be in suits and drinking champagne.

No. It’s the Heineken Cup and the top four are looking magnifique!<br /><b><br />
Can anyone cling onto Stade Francais?</b><br /><br />
Montauban were dreaming of oysters, champagne and brothels going in 9-9 at the break
but four second-half tries did the business with wing Djibril Camara touching down.
<br /><br /><b>Can they reclaim the trophy?</b><br /><br />
Ewen McKenzie’s brought his success with the Waratahs over to the capital and has
instilled a real workmanlike ethic that was sometimes lost behind all the glitz and

Wait until Christmas when the Heineken Cup hangover kicks in. It could play into Perpignan’s

Umaga’s side shipped in four in ten minutes.<br /><br /><b>And Clermont Auvergne? Are they coming into some form?</b><br /><br />
Brock James (17 points) is splitting the sticks and Napolioni Nalaga crossing the

If that's what you call it? The rugby was only slightly better than the weather and
marginally worse than Brian Moore's banter.<br /><br /><b>He loves a moan doesn't he?</b><br /><br />
Sitting watching both BBC games, it's amazing that Danny Cipriani and Mike Phillips
- two high profile absentees – still managed to command the most interest.<br /><b><br />
That just says it all about the competition.</b><br /><br />
It wasn’t just team selection, 75% of the grounds were only half full...<br /><b><br />

Cipriani felt a little stiffness on Friday morning and decided not to travel – Kelly
must've ignored his rub down request on Thursday night. Wasps have now worryingly

Wales' best, the Ospreys and Cardiff Blues, both found life heavy going against the

to lose.

Too much fake tan, pumping iron and fine-tuning their TV accents and slick Henson

Old boy Richard Mustoe came back to tame the Sharks while David Lyons and Stephen
Jones brought a touch of class to the Scarlets but the weekend was pleasingly mostly
made up of Academy products and debutants.<br /><br /><b>Who were your stars?</b><br /><br />
A couple of England U20 Junior World Cup finalists really stood out. Miles Benjamin
dotted down for a delicious double while Leicester scrum-half Ben Youngs showed some
flashes of his emerging brilliance behind a youthful Tigers pack. Also, watch out
for a South African-born Englishman called Matthew Turner at Bristol too. His dazzling
double was a crumb of comfort for Bristol, who are still without a win this season.<br /><p></p><img width="0" height="0" src="http://www.scrumoftheearth.com/rugby_news/aggbug.ashx?id=b1e92480-63b9-418a-b492-8a22587f4a24" /></div>

Not at all. The Scottish and the Irish are warming up for the Heineken Cup...<br /><br /><b>By going on the swill in France?</b><br /><br />
No, by spending the weekend in the Emerald Isle admiring Munster...<br /><br /><b>In Cork?</b><br /><br />
Nope. Thomond Park opens its Magners League doors to Munster's monster-raving-loony
party of fans for the first time since December 2006. 25,000 screaming nutters will
miss out on goading Dan Parks but another result like last season's shock three-point
win for the Scots is not on the cards.<br /><b><br />
Just like Ulster winning then?</b><br /><br />
They have a fair shout against Edinburgh minus Chris Paterson. They have only won
once in nine visits to Ireland and Matt Williams' luck has got to change at some point.<br /><br /><b>Speaking of changes - Michael Bradley's made nine for Connacht....</b><br /><br />
It's only one shy of Connacht's number of consecutive defeats to the reigning champions.
They might've been able to down those deep fired mars-bar loving Glasweigans but the
mighty Leinster have had a sore pair of nuts all week. A victory for the fourth Irish
province (despite league position) is as likely as Dublin staying dry of Guinness
all weekend,<br /><br /><b>Predictions:</b><br /><br />
Connacht v Leinster: Bounce back ability for BOD<br />
Ulster v Edinburgh: Ulster still can't buy a win<br />
Munster v Glasgow: Good to be home<br /><
