David
Sole
There was a strange period during the mid-1980s when the prop forward emerged from the heat of battle like a prehistoric creature evolving from the primeval swamp. Once or twice a decade he would end up crashing over the try line after a scintillating 40-yard back move, before returning back to his natural habitat.
David Sole was part of the new breed. He won 44 caps over four years for Scotland and victoriously toured Australia with the 1989 Lions. A dynamic ball-carrying forward, he had a justified reputation for his tenacity in the loose, best remembered for captaining Scotland’s 1990 Grand Slam-winning side, including the memorable 13-7 victory over England. Here was an athlete with heart, a galloping force of nature who raised the collective spirit of his team.
Sole went onto lead Scotland more times than any other captain to date and his athletic and skilful style set the tone for the props of the professional age.
He is now an official ambassador for Six Nations’ sponsors RBS.
