Ieuan

Evans

The Wales and Lions sidestepping machine selects his favourite wingers

One of the remarkable things about Ieuan Evans’ career was the sheer consistency of his match-winning performances.

Whether he was playing in Maesteg or at Cardiff Arms Park he looked a world-beater. During an age of wonderful wingmen like David Campese and John Kirwan, Evans was easily their equal.

He played in three World Cups, his best being the 1987 tournament in New Zealand, when Wales came third. He is also a member of the elite band of triple Lions tourists, travelling to Australia in 1989, New Zealand in 1993 and South Africa in 1997.

A Heineken Cup winner with Bath, Evans was involved in Llanelli’s victory over Australia in 1984. He retired in 1999, having been awarded 73 international caps - 28 as captain - and scored a total of 33 tries for Wales. He now acts as an official ambassador for Six Nations' sponsors RBS.
