So fiercely committed to his art, Michelangelo would struggle to paint a more focused image of dedication. A graduate in economics and politics, his patient route to the England captaincy shows a triumph through application over adversity, especially given he missed out on the 2003 World Cup and was unceremoniously dropped for the 2007 World Cup Final.

A lack of respect for things that deserve respect Listening to the news and you see the vast amount of bad things going on concerning the country, the earth, or the way people treat their neighbours, it’s those kinds of disrespect for each other that annoys me - they don’t have respect for the planet and more importantly themselves

I’m very consciousness of being cocooned up in this world When you reach the summer and you have a tour to go on, and you want to go on holiday for short time, a week, or two weeks and then you’re in again training and playing, it becomes very hollow.

Honesty, integrity, courage and endeavour. I always try to follow line that you get out what you deserve. Sometimes it comes with some unlucky blows along the way, but it’s my belief that if you persevere, things will come right for you in the end.

It’s your responsibility to the team. I try to be meticulous in all of my preparation. It’s a sign of respect for your teammates that as captain, you’ll do everything in your power to help the team. As a leader you should do everything you possibly can.

Leadership and respect is earned through lot of hard work. Sometimes it’s the quietest people around, but when it comes to it they’ll be there for you.

You should always assume responsibility. I think it’s a great part of teamship that you have a responsibility for everybody that’s around you, and they have a responsibility to you and each other.

Chocolate and winning Seeing people who put in the work and get the reward they deserve makes me happy. I reward myself with chocolate, it doesn’t matter what type, the more the better. I do like a nice chocolate brownie.
